Inge Lehmann Recognized in Google Doodle

Today’s Google Doodle stretches beyond my knowledge bank, which is one reason why I love these so much.

Inge Lehmann was a seismologist who recognized that the Earth has an inner and outer core. Lehmann’s work led to advances in seismographic research.

Google also recognizes the “poor” timing of this Doodle:

News of a second major earthquake within a short time in Nepal today provides a sad context to this post — and reminds us of the importance of science in predicting earthquakes so that more lives can be saved.

This just goes to show how much we still don’t know about earthquake prediction.
