Google finally looks like it’s going to actually care about Chromecast for more than its own content, because today, Chrome blog announced the addition of 10 new apps.

Now Casting

Here’s a list of the new apps:

  • Vevo
  • Red Bull.TV
  • Songza
  • PostTV
  • Viki
  • Revision 3
  • BeyondPod
  • Plex
  • Avia
  • RealPlayer Cloud

You’ll find links to all of the Chromecast capable apps here. If you don’t have a Chromecast dongle, you can grab one on Amazon or Google Play.

I think most people will enjoy the addition of Red Bull.TV (which I hadn’t heard of/cared about), Songza (which might be a good Pandora competitor), and Plex (which enables you to stream media).

Which of the above is best for streaming local content (from the phone) to the Chromecast?

I think the best hope right now is Plex. I think there’s an app called Avia that might get there, but I’m not sure. I’m testing it later today. If anyone can report before tonight, I’d appreciate it.

Avia works quite well for this use case

Avia works well for local streaming, but I wish it would use a buffer play feature to enable continuous streaming. It’s also very touchy as to what content it’ll play without issues and what has difficulty.
