Be Aware of Android.Counterclank

Symantec issued this report warning that as many as five million Android devices are infected with the Android.Counterclank malware.

Apparently, the malware is “a bot-like threat that can receive commands to carry out certain actions, as well as steal information from the device.” This is one reason that you must consider running anti-virus protection on your Android device.

This latest news is also concerning, since it appears that the Android Market hasn’t totally resolved the malware issue (also see this post, this post, and this one).

Here’s a list of the infected apps:

  • Counter Elite Force
  • Counter Strike Ground Force
  • CounterStrike Hit Enemy
  • Heart Live Wallpaper
  • Hit Counter Terrorist
  • Stripper Touch girl
  • Balloon Game
  • Deal & Be Millionaire
  • Wild Man
  • Pretty women lingerie puzzle
  • Sexy Girls Photo Game
  • Sexy Girls Puzzle
  • Sexy Women Puzzle

As you’ll see, a lot of these are genuinely compromised apps. I wouldn’t download any of these, except perhaps the Counter Strike games. Otherwise, “Deal & Be Millionaire” sounds like some Chinese knock-off that’s sure to get me in trouble.

If I could add anything to this, be smart about the apps you’re downloading. Sometimes you’re asking for trouble.
